The Sierra Norte and its role in the Spanish Civil War
Throughout the Sierra Norte of Madrid, important remains from the Spanish Civil War can be found, proving the strategic importance of this territory. Places such as the bunkers and trenches of the Frente del Agua, in Paredes de Buitrago, form part of an educational itinerary that allows visitors to delve deeper into how the conflict was experienced in that area. Eight kilometres near the town now show visitors some of the most impressive military constructions in the Community of Madrid. A battle for water that can still be felt today by following the existing route between the towns of Piñuécar and Gandullas.
Another of the emblematic places in the Sierra Norte of Madrid is the Somosierra Front. Some of the fighting of the Battle of Guadarrama took place there. Famous for its mountain pass, Somosierra was a strategic area during the Spanish Civil War. Its location served as a natural defence between Madrid and the neighbouring provinces. During the conflict, it was the scene of fierce battles because of its position. Today, visitors can explore the remains of the fortifications and bunkers used by both sides to hold their positions or cut off the military advance of enemy troops.
The Sierra de Guadarrama: a strategic refuge
With its high peaks and deep valleys, the Sierra de Guadarrama was the scene of intense and bloody fighting during the Spanish Civil War. Alto del León is one of the key points for studying the conflict in the area, as it divided the front lines, and the preserved trenches, shelters and bunkers invite travellers to remember the events that took place there.
Throughout the territory, visitors can find commemorative monuments that encourage reflection on the consequences of the conflict, while exploring a setting that combines natural beauty with a heritage rich in history. Las Vegas and Alcarria Madrileña: the Battle of Jarama
The villages of Las Vegas & Alcarria Madrileña also witnessed the passage of the Spanish Civil War. Undoubtedly, one of the region’s greatest attractions is the Tajuña Greenway, also known as the “40-Day Train Route”. Also referred to as the “Negrín Route”, it served to connect the railway lines between Madrid and Zaragoza, as well as Madrid and Valencia, in order to prevent the capital from becoming cut off. This line was built in just forty days and, after the end of the conflict, fell into disuse. Today, it passes through the towns of Morata de Tajuña, Perales de Tajuña, Tielmes, Carabaña, Orusco and Ambite, before reaching Estremera.
In Morata de Tajuña, there is a museum dedicated to the Spanish Civil War, where visitors can find a whole collection of objects carried by soldiers from both sides during the weeks of the Battle of Jarama, one of the bloodiest confrontations of the war. Trenches, monuments, museums, bunkers, machine-gun nests… All of this can be found throughout a territory with many stories to tell.
The Sierra Oeste of Madrid and its historic defences
The proximity of the Sierra Oeste of Madrid to the capital made this territory a strategic setting. Between 6 and 25 July 1937, the Battle of Brunete took place, one of the most important battles of the Spanish Civil War and one of the most interesting for enthusiasts of historical and military tourism. The best-preserved remains of the confrontation can be found in the Sierra Oeste.
Navalagamella is one of the most important enclaves linked to this battle, and the recovery work carried out in recent years to preserve the blockhouse-type forts has been essential in highlighting the historical heritage of the territory. A route known as the “Fort Route” runs through the most relevant points of interest in an area where one of the fiercest confrontations of the Spanish Civil War took place.
