In this post, we want to show you some of the lesser-known spots in Madrid that you might not expect, a rural Madrid closer than you think, where you can enjoy peace and quiet during the week. Four corners in our region (Sierra Norte de Madrid, Vegas & Alcarria Madrileña, Sierra de Guadarrama, and Sierra Oeste de Madrid) where you can escape the weekend crowds. These weekday getaways will allow you to explore the towns and natural landscapes of the Community of Madrid, offering a much more authentic experience, with fewer people and at a more relaxed pace.

1. Montejo de la Sierra and the Montejo Beech Forest (Sierra Norte of Madrid)

Montejo de la Sierra has become one of the perfect destinations for travelers seeking a leisurely connection with nature. It’s ideal for those who want to hear the sound of silence, be captivated by the magic of its landscapes, and immerse themselves in a place like the Montejo Beech Forest. This forest, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2019, boasts spectacular verdant scenery. A vital natural environment for the region, it currently has restricted access and requires accreditation for entry.

Weekday plan: Guided walk through the beech forest (advance booking required), visit to the historic center of Montejo, and lunch at a restaurant serving traditional cuisine.

2. Chinchón, the charm of history and gastronomy (Vegas & Alcarria Madrileña)

Chinchón is one of the best-known towns in the Community of Madrid and one of the four towns located within the Vegas & Alcarria Madrileña region. Its Plaza Mayor is one of the town’s most visited spots, a testament to the simple and austere Castilian spirit. Moreover, Chinchón is one of the region’s most important gastronomic destinations. Its restaurants, with their culinary offerings based on locally sourced ingredients, pay homage to traditional Castilian cuisine. And did you know that Chinchón has been featured in films?

Weekday plan: Breakfast with local pastries, a stroll through the Castle of the Counts, a visit to a winery or distillery, and lunch at a traditional inn.

3. Pelayos de la Presa and the Monastery of Santa María la Real de Valdeiglesias (Western Sierra of Madrid)

If you prefer a less well-known but equally historic destination, the town of Pelayos de la Presa is a perfect choice. This town of about 2,500 inhabitants is home to one of the most important heritage sites in the Community of Madrid: the Cistercian Monastery of Santa María La Real de Valdeiglesias. Steeped in legends that have surrounded it throughout its history, it was founded around 1150 and declared a National Historic Monument in 1984. Its proximity to the San Juan Reservoir makes it an ideal destination for day trips to escape the hustle and bustle of the capital.

Weekday plan: Cultural visit to the monastery, stroll along the San Juan Reservoir, and a relaxing afternoon on a terrace with a view. 

4. La Pedriza, the natural paradise of the Sierra de Guadarrama

Located in the municipality of Manzanares El Real, one of the must-see towns in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains, La Pedriza has become an ideal destination for adventurers who want to combine the beauty of incomparable natural landscapes with the opportunity to enjoy sports like climbing or hiking along the trails that surround one of the most spectacular spots in the Community of Madrid. Its granite character and the flora and fauna found there make a visit essential to experiencing the best of MadRural.
